Tooth Extraction

There are several reasons that a tooth will need to be pulled, or extracted.

  • Extensive decay and cannot be restored
  • Fracture of a tooth below the gumline
  • Extensive periodontal disease
  • Space needed for orthodontic treatment (braces)

Care After Extraction

Mild bleeding after extraction can occur along with some swelling and slight discomfort. Your dentist will recommend anti-inflammatory medications for you to take to reduce your discomfort. In the immediate hours afterwards, a cold compress can be used in 5 minute increments with 5 minutes of rest in between. It is very important that the healing site after a tooth extraction is not interrupted. Care should be taken with brushing and no suction should occur inside the mouth by avoiding straws, smoking, and spitting.
