A crown is a cap cemented onto a tooth. Crowns do not only replaces the original tooth but can create an even better esthetic appearance, by closing gaps between teeth and creating a better realignment of teeth.
Extraction of the tooth means removing the tooth out of its socket. Since teeth are important both aesthetically and functionally, all efforts are made to preserve them and avoid their extraction, but there are some cases that require eventual removal. Learn more about:

What if I need to replace a missing tooth?
There are several ways to replace missing teeth. You could opt for a bridge, partial, or even better a dental implant. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. They are more durable than dentures and are not removable so you treat them just like your own teeth.
With a dental implant, it will be just like any other tooth. Once the dentist places the implant in the place where the tooth was, it will need some time to attach to the bone (graft) and become stable. This takes a couple of months and within that time it will heal and be ready to attach the crown.
The top part of the new tooth will be a porcelain crown and will resemble a normal tooth. It is attached to the titanium post and is set. It will look just like all of your other teeth so no one will ever know you lost a tooth. The fix will be perfect and you can eat and drink as usual. Dr. Bagheri does all the work in her office with her state-of-the-art equipment. Some dentists send patients to have the surgery done elsewhere but that is not needed here. Dr Bagheri is uniquely a dual specialist. She is a prosthodontist and periodontist and works with her team closely at the office so all the work is done in-office and everything flows very smoothly. Digital imaging improves the speed of taking impressions and shortens the time it takes to get everything started.
Is this covered on my insurance?
At New York Total Dental, we understand that when it comes to your dental care, finances are often a concern. We never want the cost to be a deterrent for our patients, and we're happy to work with you to fit your treatment plan into your budget. We'll always discuss your treatment needs and finances with you before moving forward with any procedures so there are no surprises for you.
One question we get asked a lot is whether certain procedures are covered by insurance. Well, each procedure is different and some are covered and others are not. If you are concerned about the cost, we can work out a plan with you to control your out-of-pocket expenses. Our friendly staff can also help you figure out the insurance forms and help you to understand your coverage, premiums, and more. We will plan your treatments to work within your budget.

Will it hurt (this procedure)?
People often avoid the dentist out of fear. They are afraid that the treatment will be painful and that they will not want to continue. But we have the cure for this. We offer anesthesia and nitrous oxide for dental procedures where the patient may experience discomfort. We want you to be relaxed and completely at ease during your visit. The new technology used today makes it to where you feel no pain at all. You can have nitrous for teeth cleanings if you have anxiety and it would help you be comfortable. Our patient is always our top concern.
My tooth doesn’t hurt anymore, why go to the dentist?
The tooth may have stopped hurting temporarily, but until you get rid of the problem it will keep coming back. The pain is there to tell you something is wrong and you need to go see the dentist. If you’re feeling pain it is most likely from infection and that won’t go away on its own. You will need treatment to get rid of the infection and save the tooth.
Prevention is the key to achieving maximum health. Good oral hygiene and regular 6-month checkups help prevent gum disease and tooth decay that leads to tooth loss. Dr. Bagheri and her staff will show you how to care for your teeth and prevent the problems that come with poor tooth brushing habits.

Are x-rays really necessary?
The doctor uses a variety of tools to keep your teeth clean, check their health, and protect them from damage. X-rays are important for letting the doctor see what is happening in your mouth. There are problems that can be prevented by taking a look inside the jaw bone. We keep the number down to a minimum and they are safer with the newer imaging technology.
X-rays have gotten safer in the last few years and the digital images come out clearer and easier. You can view them much faster and the doctor will explain everything that he sees and why he recommends certain treatments.
At New York Total Dental, the 3-D X-ray technology is used sometimes for a more precise treatment planning. Many dental offices send their patients to other places to have this special xray done but at New York Total Dental, the CBCT machine is in the office for your convenient so you don’t move between offices in case your dentist asks you to have this image done especially for RCT, Implant or wisdom tooth extraction.
If you are curious about implant surgery, Dr. Bagheri can go over that with you and discuss the procedure as well as cost, expectations, and what to do afterward. The doctor uses a 3-D cone beam imaging scanner to ensure the placement is accurate and that it will last a long, long time.

Why should I go to the dentist regularly?
Most people take the approach of...if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. However, just because the tooth has stopped hurting does not mean the problem is solved. The pain is there as a red flag to tell you something is wrong and you should get it looked at. It may not hurt every day and it may come and go, but either way, it is there to give you a message. Don’t overlook it, it will not go away on its own.
What type of toothbrush and toothpaste should I use?
When buying dental supplies you should purchase 2 toothbrushes and change them out every 3 months. The bristles should be soft. Medium or firm are hard on your gums and teeth and can cause them to bleed. You’ll know when to buy new toothbrushes when they are flattened with the bristles curled. Another option is to use an electric toothbrush.
If your bristles are damaged you need a new toothbrush. Damaged bristles won’t get into the little crevices of the tooth to clean it. For the best toothpaste, choose products with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. They have fluoride which is essential for healthy teeth.
What causes cavities?
Cavities are caused by germs and bacteria that live in your mouth. If you don’t brush your teeth regularly this bacteria can grow and become a bad problem. You should brush and floss teeth twice per day, morning and night to get rid of food particles that can turn into bacteria. When you eat sweets or foods high in carbohydrates especially the sticky ones, the bacteria convert the sugar into an acid that dissolves away the tooth enamel. This can happen in as little as 30 minutes after consuming sugary foods.
What are partials?
A partial refers to a partial denture, a dental prosthetic that replaces a tooth or missing teeth. Sometimes you only need to replace one or two teeth and the partial is perfect for this purpose. The replacement teeth are attached to a base material resembling human gums and are held in by clasps that attach to nearby teeth for support.
What is a denture?
Full dentures include two pieces, an upper and a lower denture. They resemble a full set of teeth. Each plate fits into the mouth and is held by suction. They will need to be aligned periodically because your gums shrink as you age and they will have to be reshaped to work properly. This is important if you do not want to use denture adhesive. Many people don’t want to have to fuss with tubes of cream or powders. So making sure your dentures fit by having them checked periodically is a good alternative.
How do I care for my denture?
You take care of dentures the same way that you take care of your teeth. You brush them twice per day, morning and night and after meals if possible. At night you remove the dentures and brush them with a soft brush to remove food residue. Then place them in a container of water to soak overnight. Then brush your mouth and tongue as part of your oral hygiene habits. In the morning you brush them before putting them back in.
